A Civilized Place for Public Discussion
Please treat this forum with the same respect you would a public park. We are a shared community resource—a place to share skills, knowledge, and interests through ongoing conversation.
These guidelines are not hard and fast rules, but principles to keep our community a kind, friendly, and civilized place for public discourse.
Improve the Discussion
Help us make this a great place by always adding something constructive to the conversation. If you are not sure your post adds value, take some time to think it over and try again later.
Before replying or starting your own topic, browse existing discussions. You will have a better chance of meeting others who share your interests and avoid duplicating topics. Be respectful of the topics and the people discussing them, even if you disagree.
Disagree Respectfully
You may disagree with others, and that is completely fine. However, remember to criticize ideas, not people. Please avoid:
- Name-calling
- Ad hominem attacks
- Responding to a post’s tone instead of its actual content
- Knee-jerk contradiction
Instead, provide thoughtful insights that elevate the conversation.
Your Participation Counts
Your conversations set the tone for every new arrival. Help us shape the future of this community by engaging in valuable discussions and avoiding those that are not.
Use the tools provided by the community to identify the best (and worst) contributions: bookmarks, likes, flags, replies, edits, and muting. Use these features to improve the experience for yourself and everyone else. Let’s leave our community better than we found it.
See a Problem? Flag It
Moderators are responsible for this forum, but so are you. With your help, moderators can act as community facilitators rather than police.
When you see bad behavior, don’t reply. Replying only encourages it and wastes your energy. Just flag it. If enough flags accrue, action will be taken.
To maintain our community, moderators reserve the right to remove any content or user account for any reason at any time.
Always Be Civil
Nothing sabotages a healthy conversation like rudeness. Keep the following in mind:
- Be civil: Don’t post anything offensive, abusive, or resembling hate speech.
- Keep it clean: Don’t post anything obscene or sexually explicit.
- Respect privacy: Don’t harass anyone, impersonate people, or expose private information.
- Respect our forum: Don’t post spam or vandalize the platform.
If you’re unsure, ask yourself how you would feel if your post was featured on the front page of a major news site. Keep your language, links, and images safe for family and friends.
Keep It Tidy
Help us spend more time discussing and less time cleaning up by putting things in the right place:
- Don’t start a topic in the wrong category (please read the category definitions).
- Don’t cross-post the same content in multiple topics.
- Don’t post no-content replies (use the “Like” button instead of typing “+1” or “Agreed”).
- Don’t divert a topic midstream (use “Reply as a Linked Topic” instead).
- Don’t sign your posts—your profile information is already attached.
Respect Intellectual Property
Post only your own work. Do not post anything digital that belongs to someone else without permission. You may not share methods, links, or descriptions for stealing intellectual property (software, video, audio, images) or breaking any laws.
